About Teak Furniture
Teak - the best wood for garden furniture
The garden season has begun! Breakfast, reading and relaxing in the garden or on the terrace, don't you think? Special moments also deserve special equipment, and real wood is many times more pleasant and handsome than unsightly white plastic. But not every wooden furniture can easily stand outside in wind and weather. In fact, there are only a few types of wood that are as suitable for garden tables or chairs as teak wood. Here we tell you everything you need to know about the "King of Wood Species".
What makes teak so advantageous for garden furniture?
The teak tree is native to the monsoon forests of southern and Southeast Asia. The fact that we ship it halfway around the world is due to the special properties of its wood: It naturally has a very high rubber content. This makes it weatherproof and insensitive to moisture. In addition, it contains other ingredients that protect it from fungal infestation and insects.
It is acid-resistant, very robust and dimensionally stable, so it does not warp - all properties that make it the ideal material. It is in demand as timber, for furniture, parquets and boats. Its insensitivity, especially to moisture, ensures that teak furniture can sometimes be left in the rain without the wood swelling up. And then there is his beautiful golden brown to reddish color with a fine decorative grain, which makes garden furniture made of teak so particularly attractive.
The correct care of teak furniture
As I said before, teak garden furniture is not particularly in need of care. For cleaning, it is sufficient to wipe them with a damp cloth. If you want to preserve the original red-gold color of the wood, you should occasionally treat your furniture with a special teak oil. Otherwise, it takes on a greyish color over time. However, the so-called graying does not detract from the quality of the wood - rather, it is almost the built-in wood protection.
In winter, the garden furniture should nevertheless be stored in the shed, in a covered place or under a protective cover to extend the service life. If you are using a tarpaulin, make sure that the wooden parts are not in puddles or on damp soil.
A word about sustainability
For a long time, tropical wood was generally discouraged, as there was a risk that wood would be cut uncontrolled in the rainforest for the imported furniture. Meanwhile, a seal of approval such as that of the Forest Stewartship Counsil (FSC) provides a certain certainty about the origin. At Tyrie Teak, we do not sell teak that has not been proven to grow on plantations.
In principle, wood is still one of the most ecologically advantageous building materials if forestry is operated ecologically correctly. In the case of exotic woods, the long transport route has a negative impact on the environmental balance. On the other hand, their long service life speaks for themselves, because with proper care teak furniture is virtually indestructible.
